They Built a Railgun!?
A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux
They built a railgun.
So yeah this is a short sweet and absolutely senseless visual novel sorta thing I cobbled together in the last two weeks of Spring N64 Jam #2. The theme is "incompatible genres", and this game is a perfect way to demonstrate the innate incompatibility between... visual novels and the N64? Do you know of any VNs on the console?? Okay okay, you got me, this was really just an excuse to write some trite shit between OCs, and to practice the ever-elusive smeary N64 aesthetic that everyone loves to squint at.
Check out these press quotes from assuredly unbiased playtesters:
"It looks the way tinnitus sounds."
- my girled-friend on the astounding realism of the NTSC shader
"...i can't help but compare it to homestuck. it is also literally homestuck day what do you want from me lmao"
- my sibling
"if this was a mid 2000's web comic in mspaint then you would be making mad bank and scarring so many con attendees right now"
- kalechips
"urchin sure is uh... prickly"
- also my girled-friend
I've only been able to test the Windows build sooo if you run into issues with Mac/Linux versions then slap something in the comments and I might be able to do something idk

I extremely love the visual styling going on here and I am intrigued by the characters, they are really good!
This was a really fun read! The characters all have really distinct personalities that play off each other nicely. Love the gag with Sharkmom's struggles with technology. And the presentation is fantastic! Great job!
Maybe a Android port?
This VN is THE BEST EVER. It has some brilliant writing and some pretty killer aesthetics. And that automatically makes you better than 99% of people and is a sign of having a good personality and sense of style
I just honestly really enjoyed this... I loved how silly it was. And that's not even a backhanded 'oh-its-dumb-haha', I really do love the kind of stuff that's just like, unashamedly goofy.
It put me in a great mood, I'll be going to bed with a smile on my face and that's largely because of you.
urchin is so damn cute, I love her lil glasses. This is gold.
Linux build does not work :(
Looks good tho
Huh, did you happen to get any errors or notice any particular behavior when trying to launch it?
Yeah, sorry for the mistake, it seems I made a mistake. Will try the game on a different environment. Thanks for the reply :)
i love urchin they are so scrunkly thank you for this wonderful blessing
not as scrunkly as u <3
It was interesting read. I wondered what was happen more in the outside environment, I liked the character model!
Glad ya liked it, thanks for checking it out! I'd love to explore these characters and setting more, just need to figure out how to go about it =w=b
Good luck with it all!
You could probably just release more small little "demos" like this, but each one centered around a different character.
In my mind, I'm sort of imagining it like how manga usually release in "volumes" and then when the manga is complete, there is a "box set" released that bundles them all into a neat single package.
So basically, make each character like their own "chapter/level" that you see from their perspective, and then at some point combine them all into one "game" that have a menu screen after the title that lets you choose the "chapter" so the player can piece the overall story together in whatever way they want.
EDIT: Also wanted to say that I'm really invested in these characters, even though I've literally only seen one of them so far, hahaha. The writing is really good and fun. Great work!
Thank you!! I absolutely want to do more with these ocs, tho I'm still figuring out exactly how I want to go about that. Maybe more VN type things, maybe I can manage a smol action game with one of em, who knows!
AN ACTION GAME WITH THOSE CHARACTERS SHALL BE THE GREATEST THING TO EVER HAPPEN TO MANKIND.
The homestuck comparison is accurate, but in a good way! I like how each character has a distinctive voice, and how each of them are silly in their own way. You did good!!!
Heck yeah, thank you so much for playing! >w<
This is tight
Glad you enjoyed it!! I stumbled on the stream archive of your playthrough, and I gotta say... this is officially my favorite comment I have gotten on Railgun:
(though fun fact i am not in fact a zoomer xD)
this is almost like how it feels to live with my roomates.
You did a fantastic job on this gubs, it turned out really good! Your attention to detail on making it as authentic to the N64 really stands out. Cant wait to see what you make in the future.
Heck yeah, absolutely spent the better part of a decade slowly learning how to get those signature N64 smeary vibes :D
love it
Thanku for playing!!
i can smell this room and the crumbling bricks so vividly. also the bitcrushed blare of that"CRAWLING" audio snippet notification i tortured my AIM friends with. 10/10
i'm also a fan of urchin's mysterious purple bookshelf shape
YEAHHH I REMEMBER THE AIM SOUNDS
at one point mine was this obnoxious triple guitar chug. that played with every. single. message. my god how did we live like that
I could give this a lot of praise because it totally deserves it, but instead I will choose to ask this: for all her supposed intellect, does Urchin really not know that leaving your mattress on the floor is bad for your sleep and carpet? Game is awesome besides this one fact, keep making amazing stuff.
Oh they very well know... but it's a choice they've resigned themself to ;w;
Thanku much btw!!!
